I've been scouring the net... again, looking for a character designer. My pilot is fully animated, looking good, and right on track to deliver in about three weeks.
The show features humans and their pets, mostly dogs. We have some cute dogs but the rest of the designs look like they came from five different people.
Because they did.
I had a single artist create turnarounds and expression sheets to unify the models but that didn't camouflage their underpinnings which came from different design philosophies. At least to my eye.
So it looks like I might get money to have a designer rethink my world a little or maybe a lot. Look at the quick sketch on the left. I didn't try to refine him. He's a cartoon but he still is grounded in sort of a Disney reality. Sorta.
Well, I don't want that guy.
I want a greater sense of caricature. A more graphic look. Maybe his head could be built of triangles and his legs are string bean thin. Maybe he could look like a character from AdventureTime which would be great except somebody else is already doing AdventureTime.
Ideally I'd like designs that fit with my existing pet characters that I can't show you but depending on how the humans go I could easily toss out the animal models. But I will need replacement animals just as cute.
I'm talking a freelance job for someone to give me a fresh look at my own cast. That freelance job could turn into a staff job that lasts a couple of years if the pilot sells. I'd love designs that make people chuckle but still appeal to 3 to 7 year olds.
You know what I don't want? I don't want you to draw designs and send them to me BECAUSE I'M NOT PAYING YOU YET!
I do want links to your existing portfolio, gallery or work samples that show humans and animals. If you don't have a blog or Deviantart account or something similar... well I guess you lose.
I really need someone with some work experience in animation, games, illustration or anything that required you to hit a schedule with quality work. Just post your links in the comments below.
Even if I don't use you, quite a few animation professionals visit this site. Who knows what a little extra exposure might get you? -- Tad
I know I often write in sentence fragments. I do it. For effect.

MOSTLY a Superhero kind of guy.
I Have no animals up yet, they are on a list of things I can draw, but seldom do for my own entertainment. I am fairly adept with digital colors aswell. I just saw this post, and thought I'd get you to check my work, I would be as freelance as they come.

Hi, I draw my own kid's books, as well as comic style art work. I work in a couple of different styles depending on the project. I have done freelance illustration work for about 6 years and have done it full-time for the past year. Feel free to peruse my sites and hopefully get back to me. I don't have any animals in my portfolio as yet, but I'm going to work to add some (it never occurred to me to do any) in the next few days.
Thanks again!

My name is Dave Beaty. I've been a professional Illustrator / Graphic Designer for over 20 years. I'm mostly a comic book guy having worked for DC Comics the last few years. Here are some links. This would be a fun challenge. To invent a new look only for this project. Thanks.

I hope this doesn't get posted more than once, but I was having trouble posting a comment.
Salutations,
This sounds like a great opportunity and something I think my art could work for. I've worked in printing and know the realities of meeting a deadline. You can view some of my work here: http://madtiki.deviantart.com/ Take care.
Peace,
Herc

That's weird, I had a comment in here but it looks like it said no?
Anyway, a shorter message:
A friend of mine pointed me here! I've got an animation and comics background with a knack for variety - although I've been doing more realism studies lately (learn the rules and then break 'em!)

http://iron-gibbet.deviantart.com/gallery/3112684 - labor of love collab comic with my wife. I layout/pencil and she inks and colours.
questions, comments, feel free to drop them my way! And if you get a chance to look at my work- thank you!
One last thing: I did a double take when I realized the work you've done! I'm glad I found your blog.
Once again (sorry if this double posts!) Cheers!

Thank you for the opportunity, Tad! I've got a technical drafting background and a degree in Architecture and worked for thirteen years for a company that does Themed Retail and Entertainment Design. This particular specialty fortunately afforded me chances to integrate my cinematic inclinations into a built environment, and to utilize character work into its presentation and promotion.
Some character work of mine can be seen in my winning entry for John Scalzi's "Redshirts" promotion competition from last year: http://whatever.scalzi.com/2012/05/29/redshirts-contest-winners-reviews-and-so-on-and-such/ . This particular entry is featured in a post from my limited-run blog from last October that lists some of my "non-creepy" commissions of artpieces: http://naturetrailtohellin3d.blogspot.com/2012/11/know-youll-never-see-hideous-effects.html .
Some quick sketchwork featuring emotional reactions from caricatured guests that I witnessed when working at Halloween Horror Nights is uploaded here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/naturetrailtohellin3d/7836697676/in/photostream .
A sketch of mine from last weekend's Amazing ComicCon in Phoenix that commemorates the recent rainfall and its resultant Soggy Cosplayers has just been uploaded to my Twitter feed here: https://twitter.com/N8ureTrail2Hell/status/296713403379109889 .
I hope you are amused and entertained! Thank you for your time.
